Fox Chapel students add stories to Veterans History Project

Marine Corps Cpl. Sean Godfrey searched for words as he tried to explain what military combat is like to a group of high school students. He was among 10 veterans whom Fox Chapel Area High School hosted on Friday to videotape their stories for the Veterans History Project, an initiative of the Library of Congress to document personal accounts of wars from World War I to the present day.

Potter Township site chosen for cracker plant

POTTER TWP. -- Shell Oil Co. has chosen a site in Potter Township for a major new petrochemical refinery that could provide a huge economic boost to the region. Dan Carlson, Shell's general manager of New Business Development, said Thursday that the company signed a land option agreement with Horsehead Corp. to evaluate a site in Potter.

Casey, Altmire eye reversal of subsidized import duties

MERCER COUNTY — For Pennsylvania politicians this was an easy one. Backing legislation that would scotch a trade ruling preventing the U.S. Commerce Department from applying duties on imports getting subsidies from foreign governments is a no-brainer in America's manufacturing heartland. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, 4th District, are among the legislators throwing their support behind a measure that would nix a December ruling from the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The court ruled U.S. law prohibits the Commerce Department from applying countervailing duties against products from non-market economies, which includes China.

Altmire Supports Lower Student Loan Interest Rates

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04), a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today supported a measure, H.R. 4628, the Interest Rate Reduction Act, to keep interest rates on certain student loans at 3.4 percent. The College Cost Reduction and Access Act passed by Congress in September 2007 and subsequently signed into law by President George W. Bush cut interest rates on student loans from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. Without congressional action, on July 1, 2012, student loan interest rates would rise to 6.8 percent.
