(Natrona Heights, PA) — U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-4) today issued the following statement on the United Steelworkers (USW) Day of Action on Toxic Trade. USW members came to Congressman Altmire’s District Office in Natrona Heights to thank him for his support for American workers and to raise awareness of the threat caused by unsafe imports. Congressman Altmire has consistently supported legislation to improve product safety. In December, Congressman Altmire voted for the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act, which bans the use of lead in manufacturing children’s toys, requires testing by independent laboratories to ensure product safety, stops the sale or export of recalled products and gives the Consumer Product Safety Commission the resources it needs to improve testing and research facilities. “I want to thank the United Steelworkers for coming to my office today to highlight the hidden costs of cheap imports. For years, America’s hardworking manufacturers have followed the rules and created safe products. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for many foreign producers. Swapping quality American manufacturing jobs for toxic toys and other dangerous products is hardly a fair trade. “Our government must take swift action to ensure that in the future we do not need a flood of recalls to protect American consumers from dangerous products. This is why I am supporting legislation that will ban dangerous manufacturing practices and improve our government’s ability to catch unsafe materials before they slip through the cracks and into Americans’ hands. I pledge to continue fighting for legislation that will protect Americans from harmful imports that have no business entering our country.” # # # |
